The short story “Arena” by Fredric Brown appeared in Astounding Science Fiction Magazine in 1944, and was loosely adapted into the Star Trek episode of the same name which first aired in 1967.  This illustration by David Schleinkofer accompanied a 1980 reprinting of the story (by which time Astounding had changed its name to Analog).

It’s ridiculous that I’d never heard of this artist before. The funny thing is, I had. Just last night I was reading an astronomy book I’ve had for years, and noticed that Paul Lehr is one of the illustrators. It’s funny how that works.

Aliens from a planet with high gravity rendered by John Schoenherr.  I have a much easier time finding pictures of low gravity aliens than high gravity ones.

Those aren’t Wookiees, and that’s not Kashyyyk.  This painting by John Schoenherr appeared in the July 1975 issue of Analog, illustrating the novelette “And Seven Times Never Kill a Man” by George R. R. Martin.
